The fourth trimester: preparing for postpartum starts during pregnancy

A lot is said about the three trimesters of pregnancy, but the fourth trimester, the first twelve weeks after birth, still gets too little attention. While this period is at least as defining for how you land as a family.

In this phase everything revolves around physical and emotional recovery, the bond between parent and baby, and gentle support for your body. Think of warm, nourishing meals that are easy to prepare, a quiet place to recover, and knowing where to turn with questions about breastfeeding, for instance.

The lovely thing is that you can prepare for this during pregnancy. Freezing a few meals, discussing with your partner who picks up which tasks in the first weeks, and getting clear on what support you need and from whom, makes a world of difference once those first weeks begin.

Rituals such as the Rebozo closing ritual fit beautifully here too: a conscious moment to let your body and mind land after birth, and to honour everything that happened. Preparing for the time after birth is already part of the journey you are on now.
